BIO
Angela Dennis is an award-winning journalist who covers issues at the intersection of race, equity, and justice through both historical and contemporary lenses. A Knoxville native raised in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, she returned to her Tennessee roots over a decade ago and has since become a powerful voice for underrepresented communities in the region and beyond.
Angela worked for four years for the USA Today Network/Knoxville News Sentinel and is a contributing reporter for Tennessee Lookout and Compass Knox. Her work has also been featured in national outlets including Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, Capital B News, and many other regional and national publications.
She was also the co-host of the regionally and nationally recognized Black in Appalachia podcast, which was named a must-listen by The New York Times in 2021.
Her commitment to storytelling is rooted in the belief that journalism must justly represent underserved, unheard, and historically excluded populations. Angela has earned numerous accolades for her reporting, including the 2021 Gannett Greatest Award for Community Cultivation, AHERN Reporter of the Year (2022), and multiple honors from the Tennessee Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. She was named to Knoxville's 40 Under 40 (2020), recognized as a YWCA Tribute to Women Finalist (2022), and awarded the Prince Hall Masons Distinguished Service Award. Angela is also a proud member of Leadership Knoxville’s Class of 2022.
In 2023, she was selected as a national fellow for the prestigious Maynard 200 Fellowship with the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, joining a cohort of the country’s leading journalists of color.
